Her research and teaching center on the art and history of the United States, including landscape painting, portraiture, furniture, architecture, food, and forests. ==Biography== She received a B.A. in English from Smith College, an M.A. from the University of Delaware's joint program in Early American Culture with the Winterthur Museum, and a Ph.D. in American Studies from Yale University. Institutions where she has held faculty appointments include Yale, Harvard University, the University of Michigan, The College of William & Mary and Stanford University in addition to Berkeley. She has held fellowships from the John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation, the Rockefeller Foundation, the National Endowment for the Humanities, The Huntington Library, and the Terra Foundation for American Art among others.
